Pipe Corrosion: Dietronic’s Comprehensive Approach

Pipe corrosion is one of the most critical challenges for those working in metal production and processing. Steel pipes and profiles are often exposed to harsh environmental conditions that accelerate oxidation: long outdoor storage periods, temperature fluctuations, high humidity, and contact with aggressive substances. The consequences? Premature material degradation, customer complaints, costly returns, and a significant drop in production efficiency.

To address this issue, Dietronic has spent the past 15 years developing an integrated solution that not only combats corrosion but also improves the quality of the final product. At the heart of this approach is a dedicated line of machinery designed to remove impurities, apply anticorrosive fluids in a controlled manner, and optimize every phase of the production process. The result is a cleaner, more reliable process that meets the highest quality standards.

The First Line of Defence Against Pipe Corrosion

The first step in effectively preventing pipe corrosion is removing all impurities from the raw material and the welded, finished pipe. Dietronic’s coil cleaning system is positioned before the tube forming section and features a lower roller with transverse-moving rotary brushes. This setup eliminates dust, metallic residues, and surface marks that, if not removed, could compromise the integrity of the tube and lead to increased tooling wear.

Next, the tube pre-cleaning system comes into play immediately after the final calibration stands. Designed especially for pipes used in ‘high-risk’ applications, the unit employs solvent-based or aqueous solutions at controlled temperatures. Its versatility allows it to adapt easily to different tube shapes and sizes, ensuring a uniform cleaning across the entire surface.

This double cleaning step is essential for two main reasons: it prepares the pipe for the subsequent anticorrosion treatment and reduces wear on cutting tools while improving the tube’s aesthetic quality. Additionally, the integration of a pneumatic air knife – which uses compressed air to dry the pipe’s surface – ensures no water residues remain that might hinder the adhesion of protective fluids.

Antirust System: Precise Control for Long-Lasting Protection

Once the tube is clean and dry, it is ready for the core anticorrosion treatment. The technological centrepiece of the Dietronic line is the Antirust spraying machine, engineered to ensure uniform and precise application of Rust Preventive Oil (RPO). This machine automatically adjusts the oil dosage based on the line speed and tube geometry, working effectively on both round tubes, squares, rectangles and irregular profiles.

The user interface is fully digital and intuitive: a programmable PLC and touchscreen allow the operator to set three different RPO levels, create custom recipes, and monitor oil consumption in real time. Everything is designed to minimize waste, automate nozzle adjustments, and prevent human error.

An added strength is the motorized centering system, which ensures the tube is always correctly positioned within the spraying box, maintaining the optimal distance between the nozzles and the tube surface. Additionally, the spraying boxes are modular and removable making size change, adjustments or maintenance fast and efficient with no loss of production.

This level of precision not only protects the tubes from corrosion during storage and transport but also helps avoid complaints and returns from end customers, with a positive impact on overall profitability.

Efficiency and Sustainability Against Pipe Corrosion

The final stage of the Dietronic line goes beyond protection – it’s about sustainability. The oil recovery and filtering unit collects unused RPO, filters it through three stages, and reintegrates it into the production cycle. This not only reduces oil consumption costs but also prevents environmental waste and minimizes loss.

In parallel, the oil mist extraction system ensures a clean and safe working environment. Equipped with pre-filtration and a high-efficiency HEPA filter, the unit captures pollutants and displays the filter status in real time through a color-coded pressure gauge. Once again, the dual goal is to enhance operator safety and reduce plant maintenance.

Finally, the MQL (Minimum Quantity Lubrication) unit is a key innovation for cutting operations. It includes:

  • A pair of nozzles to cool the saw blade
  • A nozzle to apply a minimal quantity of pure oil directly onto the blade

This eliminates the need to reintroduce water after the anticorrosion treatment, ensuring the tube’s protection remains intact while extending blade life and minimizing machine downtime. Thanks to these features, Dietronic delivers a comprehensive, effective, and sustainable solution to pipe corrosion, turning a critical production issue into an opportunity for improved quality and efficiency.
